Several years ago, I sat down and started writing.
People had been asking me for a long time how I started businesses, how the nonprofits I had been part of came together, and what the process actually looked like from the inside. So I did what made the most sense to me. I went back and reverse engineered it. I tried to trace how these things actually came into being, honestly and without making it sound cleaner than it was.
And like most things worth doing, it turned out to be a mix of strategy, intentionality, and a fair amount of luck.
But when I sit with the last 25 years of my life, not being confined to a cubicle, traveling the world, meeting people who have genuinely changed me, and yes, going through some real heartache along the way, I wouldn't trade any of it. Not even the hard parts. Because all of it has shaped the life I'm living right now. And entrepreneurship has been at the center of all of it.
When I ask myself why entrepreneurship, the answer has always been simple.
Freedom.
But not the kind of freedom people sometimes romanticize, where you're working less or coasting through your days. That's not what this is. It's the freedom to choose your work. To choose the kind of hard that makes sense for your life. To wake up and do something that is genuinely yours.
That's why I put this together, and that's why I'm here. Over the next nine weeks, I want to share with you the nine components that were central to my experience in building businesses. I look forward to the journey with each of you.
