How to Break In a New Leather Bag (And Why That's the Whole Point)

You just got a new leather bag. It feels a little stiff. A little formal. Not quite like yours yet.

Good. That's exactly where it's supposed to start.

Full-grain leather is not like other materials. It doesn't arrive finished. It arrives ready. The oils from your hands, the sun through your car window, the way you sling it over one shoulder every single morning, all of it is working on your bag in ways that synthetic materials physically cannot replicate. That process is called developing a patina, and it is genuinely one of the most satisfying things about owning a quality leather piece.

Here is what to expect in the first few months:

The leather will soften in the spots you use most. The bottom of your bag will start to show a slightly richer tone than the sides. The straps will loosen up right where your hand grips them. Small creases will form, and unlike the creases in cheap materials, these ones look intentional. They look earned.

There are a few things you can do to help it along. A light conditioning with a quality leather conditioner every couple of months to years, keeps the leather supple and prevents it from drying out. Keep it away from prolonged direct sun when you are not using it, and if it gets wet (not drenched), let it dry naturally away from heat. Do not panic about a little rain. Full-grain leather handles more than people give it credit for.

And sure, some of you might be asking yourselves, "Who thinks this deeply about leather?" We do. And honestly? You should too. Romanticize your small business goods, because ours will last a lifetime. That is the entire point of heirloom pieces. The value is not just in the object. It is in the stories that come with it.

The thing we love most about this process is that it makes your bag genuinely one of a kind. Two people can buy the same ColsenKeane tote and end up with completely different bags in two years because their lives are different. That is not a flaw in the material. That is the whole point of buying something real.

So if your new bag still feels a little stiff, carry it anyway. Take it to work. Take it to dinner. Let it figure out who you are.

It is paying attention.
