ColsenKeane is a small, family-owned leather company located in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte, NC. Our studio space on E. 7th at Hawthorne contains a retail showroom, 4 large workbenches where our skilled leathersmiths build hand-crafted leather goods that we sell from our storefront and through e-Commerce, and a variety of other artists in their own private studio spaces.

Leathersmith Position

Would you rather work at a workbench than in a cubicle? Do you have a desire to learn an old-fashioned skill while experiencing the sense of accomplishment on a daily basis that you’ve actually MADE something with your own two hands? We are in search of a hands-on and detail oriented person to join our fun, American-made goods focused, leather smith team.

Applicants do not need to have any leather crafting experience, just a love for old-fashioned hand crafting and a passion for local/small business. Must work well in a team.

Primary Duties:

  • Cutting, assembling, stitching, riveting, etc. ColsenKeane hand-crafted products
  • Working closely with your team to collaborate on larger projects
  • Assisting with design elements, when needed
  • Measuring accurately, being careful to not be wasteful
  • operating a variety of hand tools and die-cut machinery
  • moving and organizing various hides of leather, which can be quite heavy
  • assisting other smiths with general duties like taking out trash if needed, unloading shipments of leather when they arrive, keeping work benches clean and organized on a rolling basis

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Previous experience working with leather and or fabric/upholstery preferred but not necessary
  • Strong problem solving ability, thinking outside of the box at times
  • MUST have experience and skill working with hands
  • Excellent time management skills, close attention to detail, strong sense of initiative, fast learner
  • Friendly and good interacting with people/customers
  • Possess excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent listening skills and the ability to work independently and with a team
  • Maintain a neat and safe work environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be comfortable working with hands and display an aptitude for craftsmanship and following directions
  • Perform additional functions that may be assigned at the discretion of management

This position has physical demands due to the nature of the position and the product being handled. A candidate must be able to lift 40+ pounds and must be able to stand for several hours at a time. Our studio is a place of active production and this role requires you to be adaptable, fast-moving, driven and professional.

Customer Service Associate

Our studio is a place of active production and this role requires you to be adaptable, fast-moving, driven and professional.

Important Qualifications:

  • Verifiable professional retail sales experience
  • Strong drive to be an effective member of a collaborative team
  • A track record of excellent customer service
  • Reliability, responsibility, the ability to learn quickly and hustle
  • Strong attention to detail, follow through and organizational skills
  • Experience with Shopify; alternatively, another POS system and the ability to learn Shopify
  • Google Suite
  • The ability to develop comprehensive knowledge of our ethos, products and some production techniques to best represent our company and goods to customers on the showroom floor, and in phone calls, chats, and emails.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, including written and oral communication
  • The ability to work across multiple platforms, take initiative, work quickly
  • Social media content production and moderation experience

Helpful Qualifications:

  • Shipping experience; familiarity with ShipStation & InXpress; filing claims through shipping carriers
  • Photography skills, Hootsuite, 
  • Any previous fashion, accessories, design, or hand-crafting experience
  • Retail merchandising experience

Internship

We are always looking for self-starting, problem-solving people who enjoy working with their hands, have a passion for creativity and want to learn more about the world of hand-crafted leather goods, leather tools, and working as part of a collaborative team.In our internship program, you’ll learn the basics of leather craft including leather selection, cutting, hand-stitching, and utilizing specific tools and machinery.

Our internship is located in our studio, in Charlotte, NC, and runs 10 hours per week for 10 weeks total (typically in two five-hour shifts per week). We realize everyone is busy and will work with you to find a schedule that works for you. With very limited exceptions, and to make the most of your learning experience in our studio, your 10 weeks need to run consecutively.

Working with ColsenKeane will be an experience that adds to your professional list of skills and, when your internship is successfully completed, you have the opportunity to craft a bag of your choosing from our standard collections (Retail value $950.00) to take home: Our gift to you for your valuable time and work.
